Description

Passion Flower is native to Central and South America and is used in traditional medicine by Native Americans as a natural sedative. This may be due to the presence of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GAMA), which is an amino acid that operates as a neurotransmitter in the brain, working to inhibit brain signals associated with fear and stress.

Chamomile has long be used in sleepy-time teas and aromatherapy tinctures due to its reported ability to aid sleep. This is likely due to the presence of the flavonoid apigenin, which binds to the GAMA receptors in the brain and results in a calming effect, similar to the way passion flower behaves.

Valerian Root is a herb that has been used as a sedative in folk and natural medicine for centuries, but the science behind why it is so effective is still a work in progress. Valerian contains bioactive plant compounds including lignans and flavonoids, as well as small amounts of gamma-aminobutyric acid that may help to regulate the nervous system.

L-Theanine is an amino acid most commonly found in green tea. In a randomized controlled trial in Japan, L-Theanine use correlated with a notable decrease in sleep problems and stress symptoms[1].

Tryptophan is an amino acid found in foods such as turkey, eggs and bananas. It is added to this calming blend due to its important role in in the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a mood regulating chemical and is known as the “happy hormone,” to such as extent that pharmaceutical antidepressants work by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain.

Blueberries are notoriously high in antioxidants, which protect the body from the cell damage that is inherent to the ageing process. This cell damage doesn’t just affect our physical body in the form of disease or winkles, but also ageing of the brain.
